Nadia is an average teenager celebrating her nineteenth birthday. But her day turns upside down when she starts developing unusual abilities that make her question everything she knew. Searching for answers to her predicament, she finds herself trusting Nicolae, a stranger with a familiar presence. Why does she feel so drawn to him? Will Nadia find answers to the questions about her past and take on her new role willingly? Or will she choose to remain in the dark and deny her destiny?

How did you create your characters?

I decided to have both my antagonist and protagonist be female, because that isn’t as commonly seen. Although I consciously didn’t have anyone in mind while I wrote this story, I was told that one of my characters reminded that reader of someone we knew. Even though the ideas for my characters weren’t festering in my mind for ages, I guess I subconsciously got them from somewhere. I knew that I wanted the leads to have qualities that I wished I possessed at some points in my life, which is why in some scenes they are portrayed with such strength. If you were to compare my earlier drafts to the final manuscript, my characters are completely different than they started out.

Originally, my antagonist was going to be her brother, but I decided to put a twist on it, and I’m so glad I did! Besides those in Nadia’s storyline, most of my characters were created very last minute. Up until about three months before the story was completed, Awakening was just Nadia’s viewpoint. I felt the story was way too short, and wondered how I could fluff it up without giving away details that are necessary for the subsequent books. Just like that, the idea for Antanasia’s point-of-view came to me.

The characters in her story were mostly on a whim...I didn’t have a set plan of how I was going to write her version because it was such a spontaneous writing move; the characters came as the story continued to flow. While writing Awakening, it was amazing to see how my characters developed…and how much further they can go (in the next installments). I can’t say too much more, but just know that not everyone is as they seem and there are more characters and more twists to come! Most of my characters from the Romanian setting are in some way reincarnated into my NY setting. With those who are, it's interesting to see if the characters have changed over the centuries or find themselves in similar situations.
